Senior Recital: Alex Trotter, Jan. 23

Ashland University Music presents a senior recital by Alex Trotter (Boston, MA) on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. He will be assisted by Eric Watts, bass trombone, and Branden Barber, trumpet.  The concert is free and open to the public. 

Trotter will present his senior recital in the format of a jazz lecture recital. In addition to performing each piece on the piano, he has also composed his own arrangements of the music he will be performing along with one original composition titled "Great to be Me." Throughout the recital he will introduce each piece and explain the techniques he used to create the arrangement.

Senior Recital: Samantha Eron, Soprano

Music and political science major Samantha Eron (Brighton, Michigan) will perform her senior vocal recital on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. She will be accompanied by pianist Deborah Logan and fellow soprano Rebecca Young. Her program will include classical pieces by Debussy, Mozart along with operetta and musical theatre compositions by Menotti, Leonard Bernstein, Cole Porter and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Senior Recital: Anna Rivero, soprano, Mar. 22

Ashland University Department of Music will present a senior recital with soprano Anna Rivero accompanied by pianist Deb Logan on Thursday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Rivero is a vocal music major from Three Bridges, N.J. The program for her recital will consist of classical pieces by Scarlatti, Mozart, Puccini, Schubert and Schumann; and more contemporary compositions by Satie and Duke.

Guitarist Presents Senior Recital, Mar. 1

The Ashland University Department of Music will present a senior recital by guitarist Dominick Febbo from Avon, Ohio, on Thursday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

Febbo, a music performance major, will begin his concert with classical pieces by Bach and Handel, followed by compositions by Spanish composers including Albeniz, Llobet and Tarrega, and conclude with Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1.

Senior Recital: Rachel Kelly, Soprano, Feb. 4

Music education major Rachel Kelly of Columbus will present her senior vocal recital with pianist Deb Logan on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. Her program will begin with classical pieces by W. A. Mozart, Franz Schubert, Gabriel Faure, Daniel Auber, and Gian Carlo Menotti, while the second half features more contemporary pieces by Jeanine Tesori, Adam Schlesinger, Jonathan Reid Gealt and Melanie Brooks. Hannah Wise Presents Senior Vocal Recital, Nov. 19

The Ashland University Department of Music announces a senior recital by senior mezzo-soprano Hannah Wise on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

As a music education major, Hannah Wise (Hartville) will perform with pianist Deb Logan and tenor Jacob Poiner. Her program will begin with classical pieces by W. A. Mozart, Claude Debussy and Johannes Brahms, while the second half features musical theatre selections by Gilbert & Sullivan, Allan Menken, Michael Mitnick and Cinco Paul.

Low Brass Senior Recitals, Navratil & Henderson, Apr. 9

Eileen Navratil and Cody Henderson will present their senior recitals on Sunday, April 9 with Navratil taking the stage at 5 p.m. on the euphonium and Henderson at 7 p.m. on trombone. Both will be accompanied by pianist Mark Koehler, The concerts are free and open to the public.

Eileen Navratil (Spokane, Washington) is a music performance major and political science minor. She assisted by saxophonist Jason Wolfe. Her recital program includes Michael A. Fisher's arrangement of Camille Saint-Saens' Romance Op. 36, Concerto for Bass Trombone by Elizabeth Raum, Maid of the Mist by Herbert L. Clarke, Piece Concertante by Samuel Rousseau, Variations on a March of Shostakovich by Arthur Frackenpohl along with movements 4 and 7 of Vladislav Blazhevich's Concert Duets for Two Trombones.

Cody Henderson (Bellevue) is a business administration major with an applied music minor. Selections for his concert are Sonata for Trombone and Piano by Richard A. Monaco, Pastorale for Tenor, Bass Trombone and Piano by Eric Ewazen, Sonata for Bass Trombone by Patrick PcCarty and Slippery Gentlemen by Harold L. Walters.

Buchmelter Senior Trombone Recital, 3/26

Music education major Jaylynn Buchmelter (Wintersville) will perform her senior trombone recital on Sunday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. She will be accompanied by pianist Mark Koehler and joined by guest performers Stefan Jonsson, piano; Garrett Rangel, bass; and Steve Berry, drums. Her program will be comprised of classic pieces such as Schubert's Winterreise  along with jazz selections including Horace Silver's Nira's Dream. The concert is free and open to the public.

Vocal Majors to Perform Senior Recitals

The Department of Music at Ashland University announces the senior vocal recitals for Deric Dove, baritone, and Abbie Brady, soprano, who both study private voice with Stephanie Sikora. Both recitals will be held on Sunday, Nov. 20 in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Dove presents his concert beginning at 3 p.m. assisted by pianist Deb Logan and fellow baritone Michael Cowan. His program includes pieces from the Classical and Romantic periods with art songs from Maurice Ravel's Don Quichotte a Dulcinee and Franz Schubert's Heidenroslein, Die Forelle and Erlkonig; along with comedic opera arias from Gaetano Donizetti's Don Pasquale and Gioachino Rossini's Barber of Seville. He will also perform musical theatre selections from Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, Lionel Bart's Oliver! and George Gershwin's Treasure Girl. Dove is a music education major from Newark Ohio.

Brady will begin her recital at 7:30 p.m. and will be assisted by pianist Deb Logan and Andrea Disch, mezzo-soprano. Her program will include pieces from the Baroque period with G. F. Handel's arias Va Godendo and Alma Mia, as well as the Classical period represented by W. A. Mozart's comical duet To Greet You My Lady from The Marriage of Figaro. She will also perform several art songs such as Richard Strauss' Nichts, John Duke's Little Elegy and Ernest Gold's Music When Soft Voices Die. Miss Brady is from Ashtabula, Ohio and is majoring in music and psychology.

Senior Trumpet Recital, Jan. 24 at 5 p.m.

The first concert of the spring 2016 semester will be held on Sunday, January 24 at 5 p.m. featuring music education major Hannah Phillips (Plymouth) as she performs her senior trumpet recital. Accompanied by pianist Susan Gregg, Hannah's concert program will include Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Kent Kennan, George Gershwin's Someone to Watch Over Me arranged by Joseph Turrin, and Nightsongs by Richard Peaslee. The concert is free and open to the public.

Seven Recitals Performed in Less Than Three Weeks!

The Department of Music at Ashland University announces seven recitals which are scheduled over the next three weeks. From faculty and senior recitals to the fall honors recital, the concerts will offer performances by instrumentalists (flute, saxophone, organ, piano, cello, and guitar) and musical theatre vocalists. All of the following performances are free and open to the public.

The marathon of recitals begins on Sunday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall with a faculty recital by flutist Jane Berkner. Ms. Berkner will perform with cellist Miles Richardson, pianist Susan Gregg and Stephen Aron on guitar. Primarily featuring flute and cello, the program will include Jean-Michel Damase's Sonate en Concert, Eric Lamb and Martin Rummel's arrangement of J.S. Bach's (Re)Inventions, Heitor Villa Lobos' Jet Whistle, Lake Wallenpaupack by Daniel Dorff and Danzas de le Abuela by Ricardo Iznaola.

There will be three separate recitals the following Sunday, November 8 beginning at 1 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall with a senior recital featuring music education major Jessica Barnhouse (Cambridge, Ohio). Miss Barnhouse will present her senior saxophone recital accompanied by pianist Susan Gregg and guest performers Jaylynn Buchmelter, trombone; Derek Rangel, guitar; her private instuctor Dr. Thomas Reed, guitar; and Polly Dexter, drums. Her program will include Giovannini's Rhapsody, J.S. Bach's Two Bourrées from Third Cello Suite, Darius Milhaud's Scaramouche, along with Gershwin's Summertime, Parker's My Little Suede Shoes and more.

At 4 p.m. in the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel, Dr. Timothy Guenther will present his faculty recital in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the reconstructed Olive Williams Kettering Memorial M. P. Möller Pipe Organ. The repertoire includes music by J.S. Bach, José Lidon, César Franck, Felix Mendelssohn, Paul Hindemith, Eunice Lea Kettering, Knut Nystedt, Paul Desmond, and Joseph Bonnet; and features the Ashland premiere of the Chorale Fantasia by J.S. Bach on “Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält”, BWV 1128, discovered in March 2008.

Returning to the Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m., senior applied vocal major Fatima Imani Smith will perform a musical theatre revue to fulfill her senior music project. Directed by Andrea Disch, accompanied by pianist Deb Logan, and assisted by tenor Jake Riley and baritone Deric Dove, Fatima will present her original show of "Musicals Throughout the Ages." Fatima studies voice privately with Stephanie Sikora.

On Sunday, November 15, senior instrumental music education major Rachel Crow (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) kicks the day off at 1 p.m. in the Recital Hall with her senior piano recital. Under the tutelage of her private instructor Susan Schoeffler, Rachel's program includes piano classics from Brahms' Rhapsody to Beethoven's Sonata (Op. 49, Nov.2), along with Rachmaninoff's Moment Musical, five movements from Prokofieff's Vision Fugitives and The Entertainer by Scott Joplin.

At 7:30 p.m. on November 15, saxophonist and instrumental music education major Shayne Smith (Bellevue, Ohio) will present his senior recital in the Recital Hall. He will be accompanied by pianist Susan Gregg and assisted by fellow sax players Michael Byndas, Derek Rangel, Jessie Barnhouse, Jaylynn Buchmelter, Jason Wolf and Nick Slinger. He will perform classic pieces by Robert Schumann and Jean Baptiste Singelee along with contemporary selections including Rudy Wiedoeft's Saxophobia, Dave Heath's The Celtic Concerto, and Little Gap, Pennsylvania by Charles W. Smith. Shayne studies privately with Dr. Thomas Reed.

On Wednesday, November 18 Thursday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m.,the best of Fall 2015 perform at the Fall Honors Recital in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. Students who accomplished exceptional musical work during the semester will showcase their vocal and instrumental talents as selected by their private teachers.

Haught Presents Senior Recital on Flute

Music education major Don Roger Haught will present his senior recital assisted by pianist Susan Gregg along with fellow flutists Jane Berkner, Emily Minns and Devyn Renninger on Sunday, April 12 at 5 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. His program of classic and contemporary pieces will include Greg Pattillo's Three Beats for Beatbox Flute. DR is a graduate of Wooster High School and studies privately with Jane Berkner. Free & Open to the Public.

Flutist to Present Senior Recital

The Department of Music at Ashland University presents a senior recital featuring flutist Devyn Renninger on Saturday, November 8 at 3 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall.  The recital is free and open to the public.

Miss Renninger is a music education major from Norton, Ohio and studies privately with Jane Berkner.  For her recital, she will be joined by pianist Sue Gregg and fellow flutist D. R. Haught.  The concert program will include Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonata IV along with Christoph Willibald Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirit, Andante and Rondo by Franz Doppler and Serenade by Howard Hanson.

SENIOR RECITAL FEATURES TWO MALE VOCALISTS

The Department of Music at Ashland University presents a senior vocal recital featuring two male singers on Sunday, October 26 at 4 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts (formerly known as the Arts & Humanities Building). The recital is free and open to the public. 

Tenor Caleb Stout and baritone Andrew Shaffer will be assisted by Deb Logan for this concert.  Both singers are vocal music education majors and study voice privately with Denise Milner Howell. Caleb is a graduate of North Adams High School and is from Winchester, Ohio.  Andrew is a graduate of Wooster High School in the neighboring city of Wooster, Ohio.

The recital program will include solo pieces performed by each vocalist as well as duets. The concert will begin with the duo singing classical songs such as "Santa Lucia," "O sole mio," and "Funiculi, Funicula."  Each vocalist will then perform solo selections with Caleb singing pieces from Joseph Haydn, Robert Franz, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Richard Hundley and Rick Ian Gordon; and Andrew performing selections from W. A. Mozart, Jules Massenet, Camille Saint-Saens, Poldowski, Charles Ives, Robert Saari and Roger Quilter.  The concert will conclude with a duet of Robert Lopez's "You and Me" from the musical The Book of Mormon.

ASHLAND SOPRANO KATHRYN MOUNTS PERFORMS SENIOR RECITAL

The Department of Music at Ashland University presents a senior vocal recital featuring Ashland High School graduate and Savannah resident Kathryn Mounts on Sunday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

With a double-major in musical theatre and vocal music and a minor in history, Miss Mounts studies voice privately with Denise Howell at Ashland University. Accompanied by pianist Deb Logan, the concert program will include a variety of classical pieces from Bellini, Mozart, Lotti, Poulenc, Obradors and Arnold Cooke along with musical theatre selections including Girl in 14 G, If You Hadn't But You Did from On the Aisle, Won't Say I'm in Love from Hercules and Let it Go from Frozen.
