Reed to Perform with Ashland Native, Kevin Jones, Feb. 17

The Department of Music at Ashland University announces a concert featuring Dr. Thomas Reed, Professor of Music, on clarinet, with guest artist and Ashland native, Kevin Jones on piano. The free, public concert will be held on Monday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts (formerly known as the Arts & Humanities Building).

For his 35th consecutive annual faculty concert at Ashland University, Dr. Reed will perform a program of classical pieces with Mr. Jones including Cantilene by Louis Cahuzac, Gordon Jacob's four-movement arrangement of Tartini's Concertino, and Paquito D'Rivera's Two Pieces for Clarinet and Piano. After an intermission, they will return to the stage for Carl Maria von Weber's Grand Duo Concertante, Op. 48.

Reed is professor of music and chair of the departments of music and theatre at Ashland University where he has taught since 1986 in a number of areas including applied woodwinds, music theory and jazz studies. He is a member of the Akron Symphony and Ashland Symphony, was a long-time member of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, and has performed on clarinet or saxophone with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Blossom Festival Orchestra, Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic, Youngstown Symphony, Blossom Festival Band and the Jazz Unit. He has been a soloist with the Akron, Mansfield and Ashland Symphonies and performs on CDs from the Akron Symphony, Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and the Paul Ferguson Jazz Orchestra. His clarinet CD “Mutually Inclusive” was released in 2008 on Capstone Records. He is also a founding member of Iron Toys, a woodwind quartet that performs original repertoire for saxophones, clarinets and flutes. The quartet released their first CD in 2015. He holds degrees from The Ohio State University, the University of Michigan and the University of Akron.

Kevin Jones began formal musical training at the age of four. After preparatory and high school musical training in Ashland with Judith Thomas and John Gilbert, he attended Southern Methodist University and completed his undergraduate degree at Ashland College, studying organ with Karel Paukert and piano with Elizabeth Pastor. Mr. Jones went on to earn graduate degrees in Collaborative Piano and in Organ Performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Pastor, Karel Paukert, Anne Epperson, Thomas Muraco, and Vivian Hornik Weilerstein.

From 1996 to 2004, Jones held the post of Musical Director/Conductor of the New York City based Gilbert & Sullivan ensemble, the Blue Hill Troupe, Ltd. With that ensemble he made his Carnegie Hall conducting debut as guest with Skitch Henderson’s New York Pops Symphony Orchestra. Along with U.S. performances at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Oberlin College, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many other sites, he has performed throughout Europe and the Far East including a recent performance on the Pipes at One series at St. Paul’s Chapel, NYC.

From 2007 to 2012, Jones was Canon Precentor and Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Hartford, Connecticut, as well as being a member of the vocal division faculty at the Hartt School. Since 2013, Mr. Jones is Minister of Music at First Congregational Church, Columbus, Ohio, where he oversees a large music program of four choirs and the longstanding concert series Concerts at First Church.

Clarinets, Flutes, Brass & Strings Perform, 12/4

On Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 p.m., several student ensembles will perform in a joint recital including a clarinet trio and the Flute Loops Jazz Combo under the direction of Dr. Thomas Reed, a brass ensemble directed by Joseph Lewis Jr. and a string ensemble directed by Jane Reed. The concert is free and open to the public.

Reed Busy Performing Throughout NE Ohio

Dr. Thomas Reed, professor of Music and chair of the Music and Theatre Departments, has given a number of performances in recent months. 

• Played saxophone with the Cleveland Orchestra in performances of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" at Blossom Music Center July 5 and 6.
• Performed as Assistant Principal Clarinet with the Blossom Festival Band on July 3 and 4. 
• On June 29 he played saxophone with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. 
• In May and June he played clarinet and saxophone in the Cleveland Orchestra's performances of the film score to "An American in Paris" at Severance Hall.
• And played Bass Clarinet with the Akron Symphony in the concert version of "West Side Story." 
• In March, he performed as Principal Clarinet with the Akron Symphony in Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and works by Korngold and Adams.
• Performed on the CD "Blue is More Than a Color," by Youngstown State University faculty member Dave Morgan. On the CD Reed plays baritone saxophone and bass clarinet, and is clarinet soloist on the song "Coisa Nova." The CD is available on Spotify and iTunes.

Reed Performs Concert of Classics and Jazz, Mar. 31

The Department of Music at Ashland University announces a concert of classical and jazz music featuring by Dr. Thomas Reed on Sunday, Mar. 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall.

For his 34th consecutive annual faculty concert at Ashland University, Dr. Reed will perform on clarinet and saxophone with pianists Susan Gregg and Lanny Gooding; Erin Helgeson Torres on flute; Scott Garlock, trombone; Paul Martin, bass; and Steve Berry, drums.

The concert program will include classical pieces from Schubert, Muczynski and Saint-Saens along with jazz standards and contemporary pieces by Dameron, Amarante, Fats Waller, Cole Porter and Marc Johnson.

Lipsky, Reed & Hoca: A Chamber Music Concert, Oct. 22

Maestro Arie Lipsky (cello and flute), Dr. Thomas Reed (clarinet) and Claudia Hoca (piano) combine and showcase their talents for a chamber ensemble concert on Monday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital. The performance is free and open to the public.

The program begins with Maestro Lipsky on flute and Ms. Hoca on piano as they perform Paul Schoenfield's Achat Sha'alti, a passionate piece based on Psalm 27, and the playful and rhythmic Ufaratsta (Hebrew for Valentine), followed by Lili Boulanger's fast and lively D'un Matin de Printemps (A Spring Morning). Maestro will then switch to the cello for Sergei Rachmaninoff's Sonata in G minor for cello and piano, op. 19 in four movements in which most of the themes are introduced by the piano then embellished by the cello. After the intermission, Dr. Reed will perform Igor Stravinsky's Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo which begins on a clarinet in A then changes to a B-flat clarinet for the final movement while the asymmetrical piece is characterized by constant shifts in meter and time signatures. The concert will conclude with all of the musicians performing Johannes Brahms' Trio, op. 114, in four movements for clarinet, cello and piano.

Known in the Ashland area as the music director and conductor for the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, Arie Lipsky is a native of Haifa, Israel, where he received extensive training as a cellist and flutist. He holds degrees in Aeronautical Engineering and Music which he received before serving in the Israeli armed forces as a tank commander. After moving to the United States, Arie served as Assistant Conductor of the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra and graduated from there with distinction. During this period he also assumed conducting responsibilities with the Ohio Light Opera. He moved to Buffalo, New York in 1984 to become the Philharmonic's principal cellist and, in 1990, also became the Resident Conductor, a position he held for twelve years. He was a prize winner in the Chicago Cello Society Competition and performed as principal cellist with the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Opera and the Colorado Music Festival; and has performed as cellist with the New Arts Trio since 1996. Maestro Lipsky is currently in his twenty-first season as Music Director and Conductor of the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, and in his seventeenth season as Music Director and Conductor of the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Symphony. He is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Haifa Symphony Orchestra and is also a frequent conductor with orchestras in Europe, Israel, and North America.

Ms. Hoca is the recipient of numerous awards, including top prizes in the Chopin Young Pianist Competition and the Washington International Bach Competition. While still a teenager, she appeared with the Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic in a Young People's Concert, broadcast live on network television. She has played over 20 different concertos with the Buffalo Philharmonic, has appeared in recitals throughout the United States and abroad and is much sought after as a chamber music collaborator. Her recordings include a premier recording of the piano music of Leo Smit on the Spectrum label and two collaborations with Philharmonia Virtuosi of New York available on the Essay label. She is often seen on the Kleinhans Stage as orchestral pianist with the BPO and has for the past five summers been the orchestral pianist of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Hoca is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, the State University of New York at Buffalo, and she received a Fulbright grant to return to her native Austria, where she pursued advanced studies under Bruno Seidlhofer.

Thomas Reed's Faculty Recital, Oct. 9

The Department of Music at Ashland University announces a faculty recital by Dr. Thomas Reed's on Sunday, October 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts (formerly known as the Arts & Humanities Building). The concert is free and open to the public.

For his 32nd consecutive annual recital, Dr. Reed will perform on clarinet with pianists Susan Schoeffler and Susan Gregg, as well as his son, Charles Reed on cello. His program will begin with Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio in B-flat, op. 11, also known as the "Gassenhauer Trio" in three movements (Allegro con brio, Adagio and Tema con Variazione). After a brief intermission, he will perform Carl Maria von Weber's Concerto No. 2 in E-flat, op. 74, with Allegro, Romanze and Polacca movements.

JANUARY RECITALS ANNOUNCED

The Department of Music at Ashland University announces several senior recitals and a guest artist recital in January featuring brass, percussion and woodwinds.  All of the recitals are free and open to the public and are held in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts. 

Beginning this Sunday, January 12 at 1:00 p.m., the first recital of the year features senior music education major Stephen Morsher, percussion, along with guest performer Jake Lange. A graduate of Bellevue High School, Stephen studies percussion privately with Jeffrey Neitzke. 

The Ashland University flute studio is pleased to host guest artist Alison Brown Sincoff, associate professor of flute at Ohio University, for a masterclass and mini-recital on Thursday, January 16. The masterclass begins at 12:15 p.m. and features performances from all members of the flute studio.  From to 1:35 to 2:15 p.m., Professor Brown Sincoff will perform a mini-recital with pianist Gail Berenson. Known as the Ohio University Lyric Duo, both are highly recognized in their respective disciplines on both a national and international level. After numerous successful engagements, the duo became official in 2004 recognizing their mutual respect for each other's musical contributions and the positive energy achieved in their performances together. In addition to their recital performances, they are frequent master class and workshop presenters. 

On Sunday, January 19 at 3:00 p.m., Catherine Stone, clarinet, will perform her senior recital assisted by pianist Emily Grabinski. She will also be joined by guest performers including Emily Dine, Alex VanScoy and Robin Wolf on clarinet, and Devyn Renninger on flute. Catherine is a music education major and Spanish minor from Sarasota, Florida. She studies privately with Dr. Thomas Reed. 

The final recital in January presents Andrew Bartelheim for his senior recital assisted by Susan Gregg on piano on Sunday, January 26 at 3:00 p.m. Andrew is a graduate of Wooster High School and studies trumpet privately with Amanda Bekeny.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES PERFORM INCLUDING BRASS, PERCUSSION, WOODWINDS AND STRINGS

The Department of Music at Ashland University is presenting two student ensembles recitals in December.  Both of the concerts are free and open to the public and are held in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts (formerly known as the Arts & Humanities Building).

The student ensembles recitals begin on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. with a brass ensemble instructed by Michael Metcalf, a percussion ensemble instructed by Jeff Neitzke, and a flute ensemble instructed by Lindsey Goodman.

On Wednesday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m., the featured ensembles will include clarinet and saxophone ensembles led by Dr. Thomas Reed, a string ensemble directed by Jane Reed, and a trumpet ensemble instructed by Amanda Bekeny.

SENIOR RECITAL AND FALL HONORS RECITAL SHOWCASING SEMESTER'S EXCEPTIONAL MUSICIANS

The Ashland University Department of Music presents two student recitals within the next week. On Sunday, November 10 at 7:30 p.m., clarinetist Alexandria VanScoy presents her senior recital.  Then on Wednesday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m., several student musicians will be featured in the fall semester honors recital.  Both recitals are free and open to the public, and are held in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall.

For her senior recital, Miss VanScoy will be assisted by pianist Emily Grabinski. Alex is a graduate of Huron High School and is majoring in music education.  She studies clarinet privately with Dr. Thomas Reed, Music Department Chair and Professor of Music.

The Honors Recital will showcase the department’s student musicians who accomplished exceptional work in the fall semester from instrumentalists and vocalists.

REED PRESENTS RECITAL OF CLARINET FAVORITES AND SAXOPHONE JAZZ SELECTIONS

Ashland University Department of Music presents a faculty recital by Thomas Reed, Professor of Music and Music Department Chair, and pianist Susan Gregg on Thursday, October 31, 7:30 p.m., in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall located down the hall from Hugo Young Theatre in the Center for the Arts.  The concert is free and open to the public.

The recital begins with Dr. Reed on clarinet performing pieces including one of Witold Lutoslawski's most popular works Dance Preludes which is based on Polish folk dances, and Camille St. Saens' cherished Sonate for Clarinet. After a brief intermission, Dr. Reed will switch to the saxophone for jazz selections with Lanny Gooding, piano; Tim Powell, bass; Rich Moore, drums; Scott Garlock, trombone; and Amanda Bekeny, trumpet. Music may include Nica's Dream, The Nearness of You, Samba de Orfeu, Too Close for Comfort, 4:30 Blues, and Jumpin' at the Woodside.

CLARINET LESSONS by Katie Stone - in Spanish

En su oficina, mi profesor se sienta en el escritorio. Mira hacia abajo, a través de sus gafas, a sus apuntes. Yo, nerviosamente, monto mi clarinete y me pregunto si había practicado lo suficiente. El maestro levanta la vista de sus apuntes y me pide que toque las escalas de “B”. Rezo un poco y empiezo a tocar. Al principio, desempeño muy bien y gano confianza. Inesperadamente, durante la cuarta y última escala, ¡se me olvida el resto de la escala! ¡Todo mi cuerpo se calienta con vergüenza! Él permanece callado mientras yo concentro muy rápido. En segundos, recuerdo las notas y completo la escala. ¡Qué vergüenza!

El doctor Reed enseña lecciones de clarinete y saxofón en la Universidad de Ashland. También, es el director del departamento de música. Está a cargo de profesores y muchas programas en el departamento y trabaja muy duro. Fuera de la universidad, participa en numerosos grupos musicales incluyendo la Sinfónica de Ashland.

He aprendido mucho del Doctor Reed durante mi tiempo en la Universidad de Ashland. Katie Stone is a junior music education major from Sarasota, Florida. In addition to studying the clarinet, and performing with the Ashland University Band and Choir, Katie studies Spanish and Portuguese. She is participating in the Study Abroad program, spending a semester in Brazil. We thank Katie for providing her writing for us, and we thank her Spanish professor at Ashland, Dr. Jennifer Rathbun.

BACK-TO-BACK FACULTY AND GUEST ARTIST RECITALS ON FEB. 4 & 5

The Department of Music at Ashland University will present a faculty recital and a guest artist recital on back-to-back days Monday, February 4 and Tuesday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. each evening in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. The Monday evening recital will feature Music Department Chair and Professor of Music Dr. Thomas Reed on clarinet and saxophone, while the Tuesday recital features mezzo-soprano Dr. Susan Olson. The performances are free and open to the public.

Please note that Dr. Reed's recital has been rescheduled to a different date than what was originally published. He will be assisted by pianist Pavlina Draganova and violinist Jane Reed on his program including music by Dvorak, Maurice, Bonneau and Bartok.

The Department of Music is pleased to welcome Dr. Olson back to her home state of Ohio for a guest artist recital. She received her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Capital University Conservatory of Music, and her Master of Arts in Vocal Pedagogy and Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from The Ohio State University. Dr. Olson is currently Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She has performed as soloist with the San Antonio (TX) Symphony Orchestra, Monroe (LA) Symphony Orchestra, the Westerville (OH) Symphony Orchestra, and the Zanesville (OH) Civic Orchestra and with many professional choral ensembles in her home state of Ohio. Dr. Olson has had the opportunity to perform and record under the baton of many well-known conductors, most notably the late Robert Shaw – with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and at Carnegie Hall and in the south central region of France, as a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers.

Dr. Olson has performed with San Antonio Opera as the Mistress of the Novices in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Louisiana Lyric Opera as Ruth in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance and Opera/Columbus’ Education Outreach Program as The Narrator in Mark Bucci’s Sweet Betsy from Pike. Some other operatic roles performed include la zia principessa in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, Madame Flora in Menotti's The Medium, The Old Lady in Bernstein’s Candide, Cecilia March in Adamo's Little Women, Isabella in Rossini’s L'Italiana in Algeri, and Mrs. Anderssen in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.

SEVERAL STUDENT RECITALS SLATED FOR NOVEMBER

The Department of Music at Ashland University is presenting a full slate of student recitals in November including senior and junior recitals as well as student ensemble performances.  All of the student recitals are free and open to the public and are held in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts (formerly known as the Arts & Humanities Building).

The student recitals begin on Sunday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m. with a senior recital by Margaret Rickard on oboe.  She will be accompanied by pianist Pavlina Draganova and joined by guest musician Margaret Couts on oboe.  Margaret is a graduate of Cloverleaf High School (Lodi, OH), and is an instrumental music education major studying privately with oboist Andria Hoy.  

On Sunday, November 11 at 5:00 p.m., clarinetists Alex VanScoy and Katie Stone will present a joint junior recital.  They will be accompanied by pianist Pavlina Draganova and joined by guest clarinetists Robin Wolf and Janet Ankomah. Alex and Katie are music education majors and both study privately with Professor Thomas Reed. Alex graduated from Huron High School (Huron, OH) and Katie graduated from Riverview High School (Sarasota, FL).  

Also on November 11 at 7:30 p.m., Janet Ankomah will perform her senior recital on clarinet.  She will be accompanied by pianist Pavlina Draganova and joined by her applied Music Professor Thomas Reed on bass clarinet, and clarinetists Robin Wolf, Alex VanScoy, and Katie Stone. Janet is a native of Erie, PA and a graduate of Mansfield Senior High School studying music education with an instrumental emphasis.

The Jazz combos and percussion ensemble will present a student ensembles recital on Wednesday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m.  Under the direction of instructors Jeff Neitzke and Ashley Summers, these  ensembles will perform a wide variety of traditional and contemporary pieces.

On Thursday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m., the student chamber ensembles will each perform a selection of chamber music.  The ensembles include the brass under the direction of Michael Metcalf, clarinets with Dr. Reed, flutes with Jane Berkner and strings with Jane Reed.

The last student recital for the month is a senior recital with oboist Margaret Couts on Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 p.m.  She will be accompanied by pianist Pavlina Draganova and joined by guest musician Margaret Rickard, English horn. A graduate of Delaware Hayes High School (Delaware, OH), Margaret is an instrumental music education major studying privately with Andria Hoy.

THOMAS REED PRESENTS CLARINET/SAXOPHONE RECITAL, JAN. 15

The Department of Music at Ashland University presents a faculty recital on Sunday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall featuring Music Department Chair and Professor of Music Thomas Reed on clarinet and saxophone with pianist Pavlina Draganova.  The performance is free and open to the public.  

The program begins in the Baroque style with J. S. Bach's Partita in A minor in four movements, then jumps to the Romantic era with Reed's arrangement of Georges Bizet's Minuet and Carillon from the play "L'Arlesienne," and Fred Hemke's arrangement of Robert Schumann's "Three Romances." Pieces from the twentieth century include Vincent David's arrangement of Claude Debussy's "Rapsodie," and Louis Cahuzac's "Cantilene," with the concert concluding with Francis Poulenc's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in three movements.
